Sheikha Haya Bint Rashid Al Khalifa, the well-respected Bahraini lawyer and former Ambassador of Bahrain to France was elected in late June to be the President of the 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, being only the third woman and the first woman from an Arab nation to hold the position, which she will hold until late 2007.

Sheikha Haya is also Bahrain’s permanent delegate to UNESCO, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. To mark the occasion of her election, Suhayb Saran and Michael Duncan of Saudi Business Focus Magazine held an interview with Sheikha Haya.
